Systems Engineering
Systems engineering is an organized approach to developing and implementing successful intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies. It considers both the business and technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs while reducing risk and errors in developing complex projects.
Prior to authorizing construction or deployment projects containing ITS, MnDOT requires compliance with federal law (23 CFR 940) known as “Rule 940” where systems engineering analysis must be demonstrated. MnDOT has developed a process, along with guidance, tools and useful resources, to implement systems engineering and ensure compliance with the Highway Project Development Process (HPDP) ITS Systems Engineering Requirement (PDF) for all projects containing ITS.
Highway Project Development Process (HPDP) - ITS
HPDP – ITS provides guidance to implement 23 CFR 940 requirements on projects containing ITS.
ITS Implementation - Project Classification and Systems Engineering (SE) Requirements Decision Tree
The Decision Tree is a tool to identify ITS applications and determine ITS class, systems engineering analysis & documentation needs.
