Function

The FHWA provides stewardship over the construction, maintenance, and preservation of the nation’s highways, bridges, and tunnels. The agency conducts outreach and research and provides technical assistance to state and local agencies to improve safety and mobility by encouraging innovation. The division offices are local field offices that provide leadership, guidance, and direction to state transportation departments regarding transportation project development and delivery.
