Road construction to start May 2 in Pelican Rapids

One-lane traffic on Highway 59 between Fifth Avenue NE and Eighth Avenue NW

DETROIT LAKES, Minn.— Starting Friday, May 2, weather permitting, road construction will resume in Pelican Rapids, and Highway 59 will reduce to one lane of traffic, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. An automated traffic signal will direct motorists through the work zone.

The work is a continuation of the two-year reconstruction project on Highway 59 and Highway 108 in Pelican Rapids. Crews will begin on Highway 59 in Stage 2B, between Fifth Avenue NE and Eighth Avenue NW, completed one lane at a time. Motorists in both directions should expect to stop at the automated signals, and use patience and proceed with caution through the work zone.

Later in May, crews will also resume work on Highway 108 east, finishing where they stopped last year in Stage 4A and extending into Stage 4B, between 2 ½ Street and Sixth Street.

Businesses will remain open during road construction. Access will be maintained, but entrances may change as utility replacements and concrete work are underway.
Additional staging and traffic impacts will occur as the project progresses, and overall construction is expected to wrap up in October 2025.

MnDOT encourages everyone to sign up for project email updates on the project website at mndot.gov/d4/projects/pelicanrapids/. Residents and business owners are invited to attend weekly in-person construction updates at the Pelican Rapids Public Library at noon on Thursdays, starting May 1. Meetings subject to change based on consistent interest and attendance.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and slow down in work zones where workers are present.
