Mapping historic properties

Historians should map all surveyed properties. Surveyed properties may be any features, historic or modern, recorded in a historic/architectural survey. These may include structures, railroads, farmsteads, etc.

Boundaries of surveyed properties (historic and modern) 10 acres or larger (i.e. historic districts) must be digitized as polygons in a separate layer. The shapefile must be named featpl.shp. The exception would be linear features, such as road networks, that cover more than 10 acres. Because these features are linear, they should be digitized as lines in the shapefile featli.shp. Digitize only line segments that have been surveyed and are within your APE. It is not your responsibility, for example, to map an entire railroad corridor.

Features smaller than 10 acres may be digitized as polygons, lines or points, at the discretion of the Consultant. Features represented as points should be in a shapefile named featpt.shp. Points representing structures must be centered on the structure itself, not at the street end of the sidewalk or some other location.

If data are collected using GPS, they should be corrected in the GIS by overlaying the GPS points on a digital orthophoto, at a scale of 1:24,000 or better, and centering each GPS feature over the correct orthophoto feature or feature part. Thus, any digitized rail lines submitted to MnDOT’s CRU should accurately overlay the corresponding rail line on the FSA orthophoto when zoomed to a scale of 1:24,000, as should each point representing a structure or polygon representing a farmstead.

If there is no project number, enter a descriptive term to identify the project.

INVENTNUM Text 12 0 0

Historic Inventory Number, e.g. AK-AIC-022.  If

feature is a modern property, use "MODERN" +

the feature's field number. For example

"MODERN FN-1" would be a valid entry.

(Float)

64 6 1

This field should be coded as 0 for polygon features,

since there should be no additional feature “width”

beyond the polygon’s boundaries.
